The article summarizes the use of GIS to enhance a study of a local polluted river in Boston. Quite interesting. I believe that the students who were involved in this study (high achieving girls) definitely contributed to their success; however, I feel that this can be modified for my students in the following ways:
Our region has some water quality issues. Having the mapping system in place in my classroom would help the students see the connections between poor water quality and illness in the county. This could in turn be used to inspire writing activities.
We could also use it to draw a correlation between income levels and meth-use (if we could get the data).
Powerful.
