Now, I know we all know about Floyd Collins and all, but look at these trees. What's the first thing you notice? OK, I won't play teacher here. They are skinny. Like very much so. And they are all about the same age. I'd put them no more than 20. That means that this area was clear cut fields about that many years ago. Now, if you clear an area out, things tend to become dislodged. That's where the silt in the rivers comes from and the way I understand it now, where the mud in the caves comes from as well. I can tell you this, there are beech trees here which means that the soil is deep and good, so farming here would have been a mite bit easier than it was over there near the other caves. When exactly did the NPS get this property? When did they decide to let it grow up? That path wasn't very old either. . .just saying.
This makes me a human geographer, right?
