This is the first view from the first platform. This picture shows the view from over the karst area. There is a sandstone layer on top of a limestone layer. The limestone disolves (slowly) in CO2 and H2O. The sandstone is not soluable. Here on the Mamoth Cave Plateau we learned a few key terms. Escarpment, the edges are the escarpment. This particular one is the "Dripping Spring Escarpment". The GIS guy also showed us this feature on the topographic maps. Our location at the point of this picture is 37 degrees 05.909 north 086 degrees 04.941 west. If one were wanting a map of this area, one could check the links on this blog to find the particular USGS map that corresponds to this area.
